Chapter 24: The Table
The kitchen table in my flat sat four people if two of them were friendly.
Quinn had built a leaf for it that morning, out of oak, and it sat three inches proud on one side.
"It's level," he said.
"It's a hill."
"A small hill."
"My mashed potatoes are going to roll off."
"Then they were never meant for this table."
I threw a dish towel at his head.
Ewan walked in with his coat still on and a grocery bag in each hand.
He had a new job at the lumberyard, where the contractor with the basket of screws had said, "Start Monday," and nothing else.
He put one bag on the counter and pulled out a pie.
It was apple.
It was a store-bought crust, slightly crushed on one side.
"I didn't bake it," he said. "I wanted to bring one."
"It's perfect."
"It's crushed."
"That's what I said."
He grinned, and for a second he looked exactly like himself at nine.
We ate at six.
Quinn carved the chicken with great care and a bad knife, and I handed around the potatoes, and Ewan told a story about a customer who had tried to return a ladder he'd already painted.
I laughed so hard I had to put my fork down.
Nobody was watching me.
Nobody was waiting for me to pay for the table.
I realized it halfway through the green beans, and I put my hand over my mouth.
"What?" Quinn said.
"Nothing."
"Imogen."
"I'm just happy."
He reached over and took my hand off my mouth and kissed the knuckles.
