Chapter 18: Two Men and a Desk
Nate's POV
Corina read me her father's text at six in the morning, sitting up in the dark with the phone lit against her face.
"Alone," she said.
"I'll drive you."
"He said alone."
"I'll drive you and I'll wait in the truck," I said. "He doesn't have to know I'm there."
She considered that.
Then she kissed me hard, once, and went to find her shoes.
Dutton Collision was dark except for the office.
I parked across the street, between a tire store and a vacant lot, and watched her cross the gravel with her coat buttoned to the chin.
She went in through the side door.
I turned the engine off and sat with my hands on the wheel.
I am not a patient man when it counts.
I am only good at looking patient, which is a different thing.
She came out sooner than I'd expected.
She walked back to the truck with her chin up and got in and shut the door, and for a second she didn't say anything.
"He knows I paid it," she said. "Lakeland called him at eight last night, to say the account was current. He wanted to know where the money came from."
"What did you tell him?"
"The truth. He said he can't take a dollar of it, and he can't look at me, and he doesn't know who to believe." Her voice was very even. "He asked me not to speak at the party. He wants to get through the night and ask her himself on Sunday, with the door shut."
"And?"
"I said I'd see him tonight."
I started the engine.
