Chapter 23: Third Night

I climbed the back stairs to Nate's flat at nine that night with a toothbrush in my coat pocket.

I had never carried one up there.

He opened the door before I knocked.

He was barefoot, in a gray T-shirt, with a dish towel on his shoulder and Ledger winding around his ankles.

"You're early," he said.

"I couldn't wait."

He took the coat off my shoulders and hung it on the hook.

The toothbrush stuck out of the pocket, and he saw it and said nothing, though his mouth did something.

The table was set for two.

He had made pasta and had burned the garlic bread, and we ate it anyway, sitting side by side on the couch with our plates on our knees.

"I'm going to say a thing," Nate said.

"All right."

"I'd like you to stay."

"I'm here."

"I mean longer than tonight." He set his fork down. "Not instead of your place. Keep your place, keep your rules. A drawer, if you want one. A key, if you want that. And at work you'll tell me what you need and I'll do it."

"You'll do it at work."

"I'll do it at work. You're my head tech. I'll also be hopelessly in love with you, in front of clients, and I intend to cope."

I laughed so hard I had to put my plate on the floor.

"Take back the rule," he said, when I'd stopped.

"What rule?"
