Chapter 19: The Elder
Nobody spoke.
The tag lay on the white cloth between us, a small yellow band, with the green book beside it.
My father looked at it.
He did not touch it.
"A hospital bracelet," he said. "There were a hundred in that ward. She could have taken it off anyone."
"She asked for the A herself," I said. "She wanted to see which wrist."
"You can't prove that."
"I don't have to."
Corrado stood up.
His chair went back with a scrape, and he put both hands flat on the table.
He did not look at the family heads, or at me, or at Cosima.
He looked at our father.
"I was nine when they were born," he said. "I remember Mamma coming home with two babies in one blanket. I didn't know which was which."
"Corrado," my father said. "Sit."
"I remember the night after."
"Sit down."
"I got up for a glass of water," Corrado said, louder. "It was two in the morning. You were in the study with the lamp on and the green book open. You had a bottle of ink and a razor blade, and you were scraping at a page."
The room went very still.
"I asked what you were doing. You said it was a mistake the clerk made, and I should go back to bed." Corrado's voice was shaking. "I went to bed. I was nine. I never asked again."
"A child's dream," my father said.
"You wrote over it with a fresh pen, Papà. I watched your hand."
The nurse in the gray cardigan stepped out from behind my grandfather's chair.
She had the flat gray folder in both hands.
She walked to the table and put the folder down by the book.
"I tied that tag," she said. "I am the nurse who stood on the maternity floor at Saint Barnabas that night."
