Chapter 16: The Oath Court

The House makes the people it accuses wait from first light, so at dawn I walked up the hill with the cordless healers behind me.

Daan and the old porter stayed on the Mouth until the night was over.

"I'll be in the gallery by the ninth bell," Daan said. "Front row. I'll boo."

"You'll sit still and say nothing."

"I'll boo quietly."

The great hall of the Healers' House is white from the floor to the roof.

By the ninth bell every sworn healer in Aldenbrug was on its benches, nearly two hundred grey coats.

The city's elders sat on a bench of their own below the windows, five old men and women in black.

The Mother sat in her tall chair at the far end.

Over her head the oath was set into the wall in a block of pale stone as wide as a door.

There were three lines on it in gold.

NEVER HARM THE LIVING.

NEVER CARRY A BLADE.

FOLLOW, AND NEVER LEAD.

My six healers and I stood on the floor in front of her, where the accused stand.

I looked up at the gallery.

Daan's seat in the front row was empty.

"The Guildmaster meant to speak for the House this morning," the Mother told the elders. "He's gone below on guild business."
