Chapter 19: The Bathhouse
"The House will," said a voice from the doors.
Griet stood there in her infirmary apron, with the Mother's white sash across it, not a day old.
"Any Gold who bleeds tomorrow can come up the hill," she said to the hall. "So can any Guildmaster."
Coppens smiled at her and said nothing at all.
The bathhouse on Tanners' Row had been shut for years before the cordless healers moved into it.
They slept on the warm tiles of the old steam room and cooked in the boiler room.
The loft over the front door was mine when I wanted it.
That night Griet came down the hill with a basket on her arm.
She set it on the long table in the boiler room and lifted the cloth.
It was full of white cords.
"The House has a new Mother," she said. "The new Mother says you never broke anything that was ever really sworn."
She pinned one on the floor-five healer's shoulder first.
He laughed his dropped-pan laugh, and then he had to sit down and wipe his eyes.
She pinned the rest one by one.
The youngest healer was last.
"I gave mine back to the old Mother in the yard," the girl said. "She closed her fist on it."
