Chapter 5: The Practical
Thursday was my first field practical, and I was the only student on a crutch.
Twenty of us stood on the cold grass behind the Northmere training barn.
Rafe walked the line in his navy jacket with a clipboard, and he did not look at me any longer than he looked at anyone else.
I noticed anyway.
"Silver wound drill," he said. "Each of you gets a partner and a dummy with a punctured calf. You have four minutes to stop the bleed and clear the wound of splinters."
"Four minutes?" said the boy next to me.
"On a real call you get less."
My partner was a tall girl with a shaved head, who was also my roommate.
She had met me at the dorm door with two mugs of cocoa and an offer to hold the crutch while I climbed the stairs.
She had not asked me one question about the clinic.
On my other side stood a student with a clean white jacket and a sneer.
"I heard the Garrick girl is a Class Two," he said, not quietly. "Shouldn't she be doing paperwork?"
My roommate turned her head.
"Shouldn't you be doing less talking?" she said.
Rafe blew the whistle.
I dropped to my good knee in the wet grass and put my hands on the dummy's leg.
I knew this wound.
I knew where the silver would be, and how the flesh would pull away from the splinters, and how fast the blood would run.
