Chapter 22: The Words

Sabine's POV

We said the words on the Kettle River bridge, because that was where it started.

I chose it.

Eli's pack came down from the ridge on one bank, and mine came out of the pines on the other.

It was the first time in thirty years that a Corwin had crossed the line with Garrow leave, and nobody took a step onto the planks until Eli gave the nod.

Then they came from both sides at once, and met in the middle.

The envoy stood at the center rail in her grey cloak.

She had said she would witness, and she had brought no one with her, and no paper.

Gray was there, and Emmett, a few steps back from the rest.

They had not been asked to come, and they had not been sent away.

I let them stay.

Eli stood in front of me in a plain flannel shirt with his sleeves rolled.

He had no pin and no coat, and his hair was wet from the river.

"The old way has a speech," he said. "I can say it."

"Say it your own way."

He took my hands.

His thumbs were rough on my knuckles, and they were not quite steady.

"Sabine Corwin," he said. "At the Gathering four years ago I held my hand out to you, and you walked past it. I thought it was your answer. It wasn't. I spent four years being wrong about you, and I'm done."

A murmur went along the rail.

"I'm yours," he said. "I'll walk behind you or beside you, whichever you choose. I won't keep you, and I won't let anyone else. If you tell me no, I'll go to the river and I'll stay there."

"I'm not telling you no."

"Then say it."

I looked at his face.

The scar at the corner of his mouth, the grey at his temple, the black eyes that had never lied to me once.

"Eli Garrow," I said. "They hid the moon from me, and I found it. They hid you from me, and I found you. I'm yours. I won't be kept, and I won't be carried. I'll hunt with you every full moon for the rest of my life."
