Chapter 5: Poison and Smoke

"Eli?" I said, to the ravine.

"I'm going to cut the wire," he said, above me. "It will drop you a foot. Put your hands over your head."

"You said you wouldn't touch me."

"I said I wouldn't touch you without a reason."

"That is not what you said."

"Sabine." It was the first time he had used my name.

"Cut it," I said.

The wire parted, and I fell.

It was only a foot, as he had promised, and then two strong hands caught me under the arms and hauled me up over the lip of the rock.

I lay on my back on the ledge, breathing hard.

Blue sky showed between the pines.

Eli knelt over me with his knife in his teeth and my boot in his hand, working at the laces.

"Hold still," he said around the blade. "The wire's oiled. It's wolfsbane."

I looked down.

My ankle had gone an angry red where the loop had bitten.

Thin red lines were spreading up my shin.

It began to hurt then.

It was a deep, hot pain, and every heartbeat pushed it higher.

"Hurts," I said through my teeth.

"I know." He pulled the boot off and my sock after it. "It's in the blood. If I don't draw it out, it will reach your heart by dark."

"Then draw it."

He looked at me.

His eyes were the pale shade again, and his hands had stopped.

"It means my mouth on the wound," he said. "The only way to pull wolfsbane is to suck it out."

"Then do it, Eli."

He bent his head.

His mouth closed over my ankle, hot and sure, and I felt him pull.

I gasped.

It was not the pain.

It was the warmth of him, and his hand wrapped around my calf, and the low sound he made in his throat as he drew the poison out and spat it onto the rock.
