Chapter 16: Visiting Hour

The courthouse in Kew Gardens had a visiting room the size of a closet.

There was a steel table bolted to the floor, two plastic chairs and a guard who looked at the ceiling.

Luca had talked me in as "family," and the clerk had written it down without blinking.

"You're his what?" the clerk had asked.

"Sister-in-law," Luca had said, with a perfectly straight face, and I had kicked him.

Now he waited in the corridor, and I sat down across from Damiano.

They had taken his tie and belt.

His shirt was creased, and there was a grey shadow along his jaw, and I thought he had never looked more like himself.

"Hello, Keane," he said.

"Don't."

"Moira."

"Better."

I put my hands on the steel.

"The lawyer told me what the judge will do this afternoon," I said. "Bail, and a plea date. He also told me what you said to him this morning, after I left."

"He talks too much."

"You told him no deal that puts the weight on your driver."

"The old man drove where I told him to drive."

"You told him to take the charge himself."

"It's mine."

"And you told him to tear up the Hourigan contract."

He said nothing.

I knew it by heart, because the lawyer had read it to me twice in the hall.

For six years Hourigan Freight had hauled every container the Corvinos moved through the Brooklyn docks.
