Chapter 23: Diane's Evidence
My mother put the box on the conference table.
She untied the twine with fingers that wouldn't work and lifted out a navy bank bag.
It was the bag from the photograph.
"I found this in Richard's study on Sunday," she said. "In a drawer with Walter's cufflinks. There's seven thousand dollars still in it."
"Mrs. Granger," the man at the end of the table began.
"Let me finish."
She didn't raise her voice.
She hadn't raised it at the tailors', either, before she slapped me.
This time it was quieter, and it frightened the room more.
"The hand in your picture has a gold signet ring," she said. "That's Walter's. Richard took it off his father's finger at the funeral and hasn't let anyone touch it since. Molly has never worn it. She wasn't allowed."
She laid the photograph on the table beside the bag.
"That is my husband paying that boy. I was in the car."
Mitch went still.
"I sat in the passenger seat outside Victor Halstead's driveway in November," my mother said. "I thought they were discussing the sale."
