Chapter 6: Say It to My Face

My father's dining room had twelve chairs, and he had put Spencer Langdon in one of them.

I stopped in the doorway.

"Dad. What is he doing here?"

"Apologizing," my father said. "Sit down, Rosalind."

Spencer stood up with a smile that did not reach his eyes.

The mark on his cheek had faded to a yellow shadow.

"Roz. I was out of line. I hope we can start over."

Jasper's hand settled low on my back.

"Sit," he said quietly. "We'll hear them out."

We sat.

The housekeeper brought out roast lamb.

Camille sat across from me with her sapphire ring, passing the potatoes and smiling at everyone.

Grayson stood and raised his glass.

"I'd like to make a toast," he said. "To my little sister. To the first Abbott in history to marry for love at a gala, with a man she'd known for twenty minutes."

Spencer laughed.

"And to her new husband," Grayson went on. "A man who can pour a drink and carry a tray. I'm sure the pay is decent. I'm sure Roz will be very happy in a small apartment over a bar, eating every..."

He stopped.

He had meant to say a word about my body.

I watched him decide to say it.

"...eating every last cheeseburger she can find," he said, and Spencer snorted into his wine.

The table went quiet.

I put down my fork.

My hands were completely steady.

I had spent twenty-seven years letting this room make me small, and I was finished.

Jasper began to rise.

I put my hand on his arm.

"No," I said. "Mine."

I stood up.

"Grayson. Sit down."

"I'm making a toast."

"You're making a fool of yourself." I looked around the long table. "Everyone here knows exactly what you were going to say. You were going to say fat."
