Chapter 19: Terms
I didn't say anything for a while.
Behind me the shop was still loud.
Somebody had turned the music up.
The grandmother was on her second chorus.
Gracie looked past me at the light and the party hats and the felt banner.
"You're having a party," she said.
"We won."
"I know. I'm sorry. I'll go."
She stood up and reached for the suitcase handle.
"Where?"
"I don't know. A hotel. I have a credit card Mom hasn't found yet."
I thought about a girl with a backpack in a rideshare she couldn't afford.
"Sit down," I said.
She sat.
I sat next to her on the step and left the suitcase between us.
"You don't live in the loft," I said. "And you don't live with Gus. And you're not my little sister who I take care of now. I want to be really clear."
"Okay."
"You can stay. On terms."
She wiped her face. "What terms?"
"You cancel the book. Not delay it. Cancel it."
She flinched, then nodded.
"You refund every preorder. Every single one, out of your own advance."
"That's most of it."
