Chapter 20: The Gala
The gala was in the ballroom of an old resort at the foot of Camelback Mountain.
Three hundred guests.
White tablecloths.
Glass centerpieces full of floating candles and white lilies.
Of course the lilies.
I wore a dark green dress I'd made myself, because I make everything.
Fletcher wore a suit. It was the first time I'd seen him in one.
"You look like a groom," Gus told him in the truck.
"I look like a guy at a funeral."
"Same suit, different day," Gus said, and adjusted his own tie for the ninth time.
The ward nurse found us at the door. She'd brought the mother from 412 and the father from Tucson, both in their best clothes.
"The chair asked for them," she whispered. "She didn't tell me why."
Our table was near the back, by the kitchen doors.
The honoree's table was at the front, under the stage.
My mother sat at the center of it in silver, with her pearls.
She'd lost weight since New York. Her smile was the same.
Dad wasn't beside her. He sat two tables over, with men from his firm.
Drew sat at that table too, in a gray suit, pushing salad around his plate.
