Chapter 11: Hunting Moon
The April full moon rose over the culm bank orange as a coal, and the whole Culm Bank pack ran under it.
I shifted at the top of the black hill with forty wolves around me.
The skin came off me, and the cold turned to a thick, humming warmth.
My bones slid and settled, and the night opened.
I could smell the strip pit and the dead leaves and the wet shale, and every wolf's name, one by one.
The diver on my left.
The twins, laughing in their throats.
The foreman, rank with liniment.
The girl's collie, who was not a wolf and did not care.
And on the ridge above us stood a tall lean shape of black fur, with eyes that caught the moon.
Matthias had come.
I had not known he could shift, and I had not asked.
He looked at me, and I knew his scent.
I ran.
I ran down the long black slope with the pack behind me, flat out, shale flying from my paws.
I ran past the breaker ruins and up the far bank and across the iced edge of the strip pit, and I heard him beside me.
He ran at my shoulder, matching my stride, a long dark shape with a pale gray muzzle.
