Chapter 14: Peter

Peter came to my door on the Thursday night after the burying.

He did not knock.

He stood on the porch of my father's house in the dark, in his coat, with his hands open at his sides.

When I opened the door he did not step across the threshold.

"I need to say the part Tomas won't," he said.

"Say it on the porch," I said.

"I'm not letting you in."

"I know."

The porch light made a yellow circle, and he stood just outside it with his bad leg taking most of his weight.

He looked like he had not slept since the funeral.

"I was in love with you," Peter said.

"I have been in love with you since the sixth grade.

"I carried your bag because I couldn't think of another thing to do with my hands."

I said nothing.

"Tomas is, too," he said.

"He'll never say it.

"He thinks he doesn't get to.

"So I'll say it for both of us.

"We didn't cut you out because we didn't want you.

"We did it because we couldn't stand to watch it."

"Watch what?" I said.

"You," Peter said.

"At forty.

"In a kitchen."

I hit him.

I had not decided to.

My right hand went up and across, and my palm cracked against his cheekbone with fourteen years behind it.

His head went sideways.

He did not lift his hands.

He turned his face back to me and stood there with the red print rising on his skin.
