Chapter 23: Iron Bed

My father's house had a big iron bed in the back room, black and heavy, with brass knobs worn smooth by thirty years of hands.

I had not slept in it since September.

I had slept on the cot in the front room, with the shovel under the frame.

I had told myself the back room was a thing for later.

That night I stood in the doorway with Matthias behind me, and I told him it was later.

"It is your father's bed," he said.

"It's my bed," I said.

"It was his for thirty years, and it is mine now.

"He'd have wanted it used."

"That is a very strange thing to say about your father."

"My father spent six months in the front room dying," I said.

"Nobody ever asked him what he wanted.

"I'm asking the bed."

He laughed, the short surprised laugh again.

I had begun to collect them.

I lit the lamp on the bureau and took off my work shirt, standing in front of him.

He watched me with his arms at his sides.

He had come straight from the post office with a manila envelope under his arm.

The Crown's release was in it, and he put it down on the bureau.

"Take your coat off," I said.

He took it off.

"And the tie."
