Chapter 10: The Sunroom

I parked my Subaru two blocks away, on the side street behind the school, and walked.

It was a Craftsman in Sellwood, gray with white trim, with a deep porch and a maple dropping red leaves on the roof.

Dane's truck sat in the drive, and Hana's hatchback sat behind it, and they had both been left with their lights on.

Hana let me in through the kitchen with her finger on her lips.

The house was warm and smelled of coffee and clay.

I saw a long hallway with a runner worn pale in the middle, and a living room with a brown couch.

Above the mantel was a bare nail in the wall.

Around the nail was a rectangle of paint a shade brighter than the rest, where something had hung for years.

"That's a photograph," Hana said, following my eyes. "I took it down to clean the glass."

"All right," I said.

She led me past a glass door at the back of the house.

Behind it was a small sunroom with windows on three sides.

It held a single bed made up with a faded quilt, a lamp, and a shelf of crooked mugs.

"That's where I sleep," she said.

"I know. You told me."

"I wanted you to see it."

The room was narrow and clean and cold.

There was a book on the pillow, and I saw that it was mine.

I turned and found Dane in the hallway, with his captain's cap in his hand.

"The front bedroom," he said. "It's through there."
