Chapter 24: Lavender
The lavender on Sauvie Island was in its last week of bloom, and the whole field hummed with bees.
We stood at the end of a mown row, under a white arch that Dane had built himself from cedar and rope.
Thirty folding chairs faced us on the grass.
My father sat in the front row in his bar pilot's blazer, with his big hands folded and his cap on his knee.
He had driven down from Astoria at dawn and barely spoken since.
"You look happy, Signe," he had said.
Next to him sat the oldest aunt, in her gray cardigan, with a cousin on either side.
They had come from Hood River in a rented van, and the oldest aunt had brought a thermos of tea and a box of sweets.
Kazuko's chair at the end of the row was empty.
Nobody mentioned it.
Hana wore a short ivory dress and a crown of lavender, and she stood in front of me with clay under one fingernail she had not been able to scrub out.
Dane wore a navy suit that fit him for the first time in his life.
His beard had been trimmed, and his hands were shaking.
The officiant was a retired judge from the Gorge who had once seen Hana's mugs in a café.
"I'm told the order of this is unusual," she said, to the chairs. "I'm told there are rings, and that there are three people, and that nobody here is confused."
Somebody laughed.
"Go ahead," she said.
Hana turned to me.
