Chapter 22: The Second Mile
The oldest elder ruled on it that night, in the rain, in four sentences, and nobody argued.
The book had no Lyle Kimbrough in the water.
The law of the Count had no exception for the man who read it.
The run would go at noon, as the law said, and the Count would wait.
Lyle spent the night in his study with the door open and the three brothers sitting in the hall.
He did not try to leave.
At noon on Wednesday the whole Rim stood at the Upper Spring again.
The sky had gone purple and low.
Nobody had gone home.
The black rock was slick, and the pool was low and still.
At the edge of it, on the reading stone, Ramiro stood with the horn in both hands.
Lyle Kimbrough walked down the path from the lodge alone.
He wore his white Stetson and a clean coat, and he walked with his chin high.
