Chapter 15: The Reunion They Want
Caroline arrived for our walk wearing shoes that needed a carpet.
She looked at the gravel beneath her heels.
Then she looked at the path stretching beside the water.
"How far?" she asked.
"As far as we want," I answered.
Audrey held the walking book open at the easy route.
"There's a bench along here," she told her mother.
Caroline nodded and took a careful step.
The heel sank between two stones.
She stopped and lifted her foot straight up.
The shoe remained on the ground.
Audrey bent to pick it up before she could lose her balance.
Caroline leaned on her shoulder while putting it back on.
"I didn't expect gravel," she explained.
"It's a path," Audrey replied.
"There are paved paths," Caroline said.
I pointed toward the flat pavement near the car park.
"We can walk there," I offered.
