I wedged my front door open with one of my hiking boots.
Audrey came through carrying the second folding chair.
She put it beside the first without checking which was more important.
Caroline and Victor followed with the wet kites.
Hallie carried the lemonade and the remaining sandwiches.
Edith came last, holding my other boot by its laces.
"You've only brought one in," she told me.
"The other's keeping the door open," I answered.
She looked down at it and laughed.
"Useful," she said.
Everybody found somewhere to sit while the rain strengthened outside.
Nobody moved my picture or asked whether the wall needed a backdrop.
Victor put his long kite tube beneath the sideboard.
It rolled forward and touched Edith's foot.
She stopped it with one red shoe.
"I'm guarding this," she informed him.
Caroline spread the red bird on an old towel beside the window.
