Chapter 24: The Lookout
"You flew across the country for a comet," I said.
"I flew across the country for one more evening with you," Boone said. "The comet's a bonus."
My mother appeared behind me in the hall, drying her hands on a dish towel.
"Boone," she said. "Have you eaten?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"Have you eaten rice?"
He looked at me.
"Say no," I said.
"No, ma'am."
She pulled him inside by his sleeve.
He ate two bowls standing at the counter while I laced my boots.
"Where's the best place to see it?" he asked, with his mouth full.
I looked at my mother.
She already knew.
The forest service had rebuilt the old fire lookout the summer before.
New steps. A wide deck with a railing all the way around.
A little gravel lot at the trailhead at the end of our road.
There used to be a gate there, and a sign that said NO ACCESS AFTER DARK.
My mother came out of the hall closet in a pair of hiking boots I'd never seen.
They still had the store crease across the toes.
"You're coming?" I said.
"I bought these in April," she said. "In case you asked."
I hadn't asked.
"Come," I said.
We walked up in the dark with headlamps.
The trail was the same trail, roots and rocks and the smell of wet leaves, but the creek stayed in its bed tonight.
My knee clicked on the steep parts.
Boone walked behind me and didn't say anything about it.
