Chapter 15: The Knight Is Off Duty

Caedrin had written his request on one sheet of paper, and by the fourth line it sounded like a resignation.

He tore it up and went to ask in person.

The captain of the guard was eating porridge at the barracks table and did not stop.

"She named you personally," the captain said.

"The queen confirmed it."

"You are the princess's escort until she releases you."

"I would like her to release me," said Caedrin.

The captain put down his spoon.

"Is this about the kidnapping?"

"It is about the post."

"If you leave the guard, I will write you a good letter," the captain said.

"I will write it very slowly."

"I am not leaving the guard," Caedrin said.

"I would like the east gate rotation, and my midday meal sitting down."

The captain picked the spoon up again.

"Those are the first sensible requests I have had all week," he said.

Caedrin walked up to the princess's sitting room with the folded paper in his glove.

He had expected a fortress of reasons.

He found Seravelle standing in front of a mirror with her fists on her hips.
