Chapter 16: The Public Refusal
Seravelle had drafted three ways to refuse a prince, and the first required a horse.
She sat on the mare outside the throne room doors, holding the reins in both hands.
The doorkeeper looked at the horse, then at the doorway, which was seven feet high.
"Animals wait in the yard, Highness," he said.
"The goat has been told the same."
"I wished to enter with force," Seravelle said.
"You may enter with feet."
She dismounted and gave the reins to a groom.
Her second plan was in her sleeve, a banner embroidered NO in letters the length of her arm.
She had stitched it herself in the night and run out of thread on the O.
It said N and a loose curl of red.
She looked at it in the corridor light and put it back in her sleeve.
The third plan she had written on the palm of her hand.
It was one sentence, and she did not need to read it.
The court was full.
Courtiers lined both walls, and a row of petitioners stood in the center aisle.
Queen Velorinne sat on the throne in her dark violet gown.
