Chapter 21: The First Unsupervised Picnic
Seravelle planned the picnic on a cliff, and Caedrin asked how many people had died there.
"None," she said.
"It is brand new, and I have never been."
"The cliff is the reason," he said.
They stood in the royal stable yard in the morning with a basket, a blanket, and a copper kettle.
She had her map spread across the palace's new mounting stool, which she was using as a desk.
"My second choice is the island in the river," she said.
"It has a heron and a very small beach."
"The stepping stones are the only way across," said Caedrin.
"I am aware."
"The duck beside the second stone could not reach the bottom either," he said.
She frowned at the map and moved her finger to the east.
"The roof of the north tower," she said.
"I shall lower the basket on a rope."
"The cook has a bread oven under the north tower," Caedrin said.
"You would be lowering sandwiches into a chimney," he added.
"You are removing every adventure."
"I am removing the ones with a funeral attached."
