Chapter 10: The Night Run
Iolo's POV
I had known for thirteen days that I would not sleep again until I told her what I was.
It was the thirteenth night, and the whole school was on the moor.
The Night Run is held on the second Friday of October, and every student shifts.
Three hundred wolves, on a ridge above the Mawddach, in the dark.
The Warden stands on the cairn with a horn.
The one rule is that you run the course and come back.
I had stood at the starting line in the cold with my clothes folded on a rock, and I had felt her come up beside me.
She was in her skin, and she was shaking.
I did not look.
I had learned how not to look.
"I can't shift," Gwen said, very quietly, in my ear. "If I do, they'll see the shape of me."
"You'll be a wolf," I said.
"A girl wolf."
"There's no difference in the dark."
It was the longest speech I had made in a week.
She laughed, once, a very small laugh, and it went through me.
I shifted.
It is easy for me.
It always has been.
I went down on all fours with the old pull of bone and fur and wind, and the world turned silver, and every smell on the moor opened out like a map.
I was black.
I have always been black.
Beside me stood a long grey-brown shape, tall in the shoulder, with pale eyes.
She was magnificent.
I had known her smell, but I had not known the animal.
She stood in the heather in the moonlight with her ears pricked and her great head lifted, and I understood why her father had named her for a princess.
