Chapter 15: The Crown's Bed

My father came to the gate at noon on the second day.

I was in the quad with a Hall prefect who had been told to walk behind me, and I had not slept, and I had a mark on my shoulder and a second on my hip that I had agreed to without a word.

I heard the car before I saw it.

A long black car with a driver, crawling up the quarry road in low gear.

It stopped at the slate arch.

The chain lay on the step, off its hook.

For a moment nobody got out.

Then the back door opened, and my brother Elis climbed down and went round and opened the other side, and took out a folding chair, and a rug, and a thin, heavy figure wrapped in a grey blanket.

I did not run.

I could not have said why.

I had run out of a hall three weeks ago and I did not run now.

I walked across the gravel, with the whole school pretending not to watch from the windows, and stopped ten feet from the arch.

My father looked up.

He had been a huge man.

He had carried me on one shoulder when I was four.

He was a coat-stand now, with white hair and a face like paper and a slate paperweight on the rug in his lap.

"Gwenllian," he said.
