Chapter 16: What She Asked For

They carried him into the Warden's study, and I made them all stand.

It was a small cold room at the top of the main stair, with a fire, a desk and one chair.

The Warden had given the chair to my father without being asked.

Elis stood behind it with his big hands on the back.

Cadoc and Iolo stood by the door, side by side.

I had told them to come.

I stood at the window, with the quad below me and the sky going the colour of a bruise.

"I have terms," I said.

"I thought you might," said my father.

He sat in the Warden's chair with the grey blanket up to his chin and the paperweight in his hands.

For the first time in my life I saw that he was afraid of me.

I found that I did not enjoy it.

"The first," I said. "You do not speak for me at the Rite. Not to Penhallow, not to the Hall, not to the packs. If I say a word, it is mine."

"Granted."

"The second. Elis does not touch a pair of scissors near me again."

My brother made a small strangled noise.

"I'm not joking," I said.

"I know you're not," Elis said. "I'd like it noted that I've been sorry about the hair since the second mile."

"Noted," I said.

"The scissors are in the river," said Elis.

"Good," I said.
