Chapter 21: Page Four

I did not step back through the curtain.

I walked out onto the stone floor of the Hall in my boots and my torn jacket.

There was quarry mud up one sleeve and Cadoc's tooth-mark under my collar.

I stopped ten feet from the Warden's chair.

"You're up early," I said.

"I never sleep before a Rite," said Rhodri Penhallow. "It's a vice of mine."

He lifted the glass and drank.

In the lamplight he looked as he had at the high table, heavy and handsome and entirely at his ease.

He wore the pewter pin at his throat and a navy coat without a speck of snow on it.

"Your men are on the quarry road," I said.

"They're witnesses."

"They're breaking down a door."

"I'm told it was a hut," he said mildly. "I'm told there were two boys in it, and a bed."

"I'm told that's what the Hall will hear by noon."

The cold went through me.

He had not come to take me.

He had come to make a story about me.

"Sit down, Gwenllian," he said.

"No," I said.

"I'd like to talk to you plainly."

"You can talk standing," I said.

He smiled at that.

It was almost a fond smile, and it frightened me more than any of the others.

"You've done well," he said. "I did not think your father had it in him."
