Chapter 13: The Board

Dane's POV

I moved out of the apartment that same night.

It was hers.

I left my key under the doormat for the baker to pass along, took a duffel and a sleeping bag, and walked to the boathouse on the river, where the club kept a cot in the coaches' room.

I didn't sleep.

I lay in the dark listening to the water slap the dock and made a list.

It was a short list, and every item on it had a number.

The Haverly Foundation board met on the first Monday of the month in the boardroom at Haverly Hall.

Eight people sat at a long table with a sandwich tray.

They were bankers, a retired judge, two professors.

One of them was my grandfather's oldest friend, who had known me since I was in diapers and who patted my head at every Christmas.

They had been asking me to take a seat since I turned twenty-one.

I'd said no every time.

This Monday, they were going to ask again.

I walked in at noon in a clean shirt and took the chair they had left empty, and everyone smiled.
