Chapter 19: The Cemetery

Dane's POV

Hillcrest Cemetery sits on the north side of town behind a stone wall, with old oaks and a gravel road that curves up past the chapel.

It was a cold, bright Saturday.

I parked the club hatchback at the bottom of the hill, and Tamar got out without a word.

She wore the gray cardigan with a coat over it, and the locket outside the collar.

Orrin got out of the back seat on his cane.

He had put on a black overcoat and a black hat, and he looked eighty.

We walked up the path in a line, no one speaking, with the oak leaves crunching under us.

I knew the way.

I could have walked it blind.

Row fourteen, second from the end, under the oak with the split bark.

The stone was small and plain and gray, with two names cut on it.

THOMAS BRUBAKER.

ANNA BRUBAKER.

Under the names, in smaller letters: Together.

Tamar stopped three feet from it.

She stood for a long time with her hands in her coat pockets.

She was not crying.

I could see her breathing, and I could see how hard she was working to keep it even.

"Roland said they were scattered in the lake," she said at last. "He said it was cheaper. He said we'd take a day trip to the lake house and say a few words, and then he never took me."
