Chapter 4: Separate Wings

The Eberly town house had four floors, a lift, and a staircase I did not look at.

The housekeeper showed me to the west wing herself.

"Mr. Eberly's rooms are in the east," she said. "He asked me to tell you the doors in between lock from your side."

"Thank you."

"He also asked me to tell you that he has never in his life asked a housekeeper to say such a thing."

I laughed, and it surprised me.

She almost smiled and left me alone with a wide white bed.

By midnight I had unpacked the duffel into a closet bigger than the print shop's back office.

Everything I owned fit on one shelf.

I did not sleep.

At two in the morning I went down the back stairs in my socks for a glass of water. I took the servants' stairs because they were enclosed, with walls on both sides and a rail I could grip.

The kitchen was dark. I filled a glass at the tap.

My hand was shaking, and the glass slipped.

It broke across the tile with a loud crack.

I knelt to pick up the pieces, and a sliver went into the heel of my palm.

"Don't move."

Cormick stood in the doorway in a gray T-shirt and sleep pants, with his hair flattened on one side.

"I'm fine," I said. "It's just a glass."

"You're bleeding on the floor."

He crossed the kitchen in three steps and lifted me by the elbows, clear of the glass, and set me on the counter.
