Chapter 12: House Settled
The harvest-closing meeting of the Vermilion Rice Growers' Co-op met on the first Saturday of November, at ten in the morning.
The co-op hall is a long cinder-block building beside the drying yard, with a stage at one end and a hundred folding chairs.
Forty farmers sat in them in their feed caps and Sunday jackets.
The priest sat in the front row.
My father sat at the table on the stage with his ledger open in front of him, smiling.
I came in at Seb's side in my blue dress, because it was the one thing in my closet nobody could say I hadn't been told to wear.
He wore a dark suit and a white shirt.
He carried a manila folder under one arm, and had not touched me since we left the house.
I had felt the lack of it all the way down the levee road.
At the door he stopped.
"I'll say the money and the letters," he said quietly.
"The rest is yours, if you want it."
I thought of Biloxi, and the deposit slip, and the cash drawer.
I thought of every harvest my father had said he'd settle things with Seb Guidry after the rice was in.
"Say the money," I said.
"I'll find the rest."
"Where?" Seb asked.
"In his book," I said.
Raymond saw us walk in.
His smile didn't move.
His eyes went to the folder, and to Seb, and to me in my blue dress.
I watched his knuckles go white on the ledger.
"Friends," he said warmly into the microphone.
