Chapter 8: The Granddaughter
Nobody breathed.
Thirty men in dark suits looked up and down the table, hunting for a stranger.
Remo laughed.
"An heir," he said. "Mr. Greco, with respect, you'll have to say who. We've all been waiting for the old man's granddaughter to turn up for twenty years."
"Then you won't wait any longer," said Massimo.
He pushed back his chair and walked the length of the room.
The candles shook in his wake.
He stopped behind my seat, and he did not touch me.
"Fiora," he said, in Sicilian, low enough that only the near end of the table could hear. "It's your table."
I put my napkin on the cloth.
I stood.
The green silk fell straight to the floor, and my knees did not shake.
"Good evening," I said in Sicilian.
I said it in my mother's dialect, in the soft old vowels of Palermo.
No one moved.
"My name is Fiora Ruggieri. My mother was Rosalia Ruggieri. My grandfather is Don Aurelio."
I turned my head, slowly, until I was looking at Remo.
His face had gone the color of the tablecloth.
"Fio," he said, in English. "Fio, what are you doing?"
"I'm answering you," I said, in Sicilian. "You said I was too stupid to follow a word of it."
"I didn't."
"At the restaurant on Friday. You said it to Cinzia. You said, keep talking, she can't understand, act like she doesn't exist."
I let the room hear the sound of it.
"You said I was an ordinary girl from nowhere, and that I had no one to depend on but you."
"That isn't," Remo began.
"You said, on the curb, that my record was clean and you needed me to move your money. You said I was useful for now."
