Chapter 22: The Gathering
Mara's POV
Eighty wolves waited in the hall when we walked in at moonrise.
They filled the benches along both walls and stood three deep at the back, every family of the coast in its good black coat.
The long oak table had been pushed to the middle of the floor.
Eli lay on it, under a grey sheet, with his face the color of candle wax.
Ronan stood at his head with a knife held loosely at his side.
Silas sat in the iron-armed chair that Darius had left empty.
He had taken the seat himself, and no one had stopped him.
I walked down the middle of the room with Darius on my left and Nico on my right and the black book in both hands.
Nobody spoke.
Every man in the hall had a sliver of wax in each ear, and I understood that Silas had told them to, one by one.
"Miss Venn," Silas said. "You came of your own will. The families will remember it."
"Let Eli go."
"After you speak." He folded his hands. "The law is clear. You give your word freely before every family, and you name the Alpha you choose. Name me, Miss Venn, and my nephew breathes and walks out of here, and you walk out with your mother's address. I will have it written in the ledger that you chose."
"It wouldn't be a choice."
"The families will say it is."
"You asked me to name him last night and it didn't work." I set the book down on the oak next to Eli's feet. "You've found a better way to make me afraid. It's still fear, and a yes out of fear is air. You knew that six years ago. It's why you shut me in a house for nine days and let the kind men do your work."
