Chapter 23: Judgment
I changed back on the cold flagstones with Darius's coat dragged round my shoulders, and this time everyone watched.
Nico and two of his men lifted Eli off the table and carried him toward the doctor waiting at the door.
Eli lifted a thumb as he went.
The hall was silent.
Eighty faces were turned toward me, and the wax lay on the floor in small pink crumbs.
Silas still knelt, with his hands pressed flat on the boards and his head down.
Ronan knelt beside him, without the knife.
The thin elder stood up from the bench at the end of the front row.
He leaned a little on his stick.
"The law has an old answer for this," he said, and his thin voice reached every corner. "A man who tries to force the Seat's word, with a blade or with a hostage or with a locked door, forfeits his life. It is written. The families have read it out at three Gatherings in my memory."
"Death," the heavy man said hoarsely. He had not got up from his knees. "It's what's written."
A low sound went round the benches.
It was not quite agreement.
It was something heavier, older, waiting to be told what to do.
I looked down at Silas.
He lifted his head.
His face was grey, and his mouth was twisted, and he looked at me with absolute hatred.
"You can do it," he said. "You've earned it. But understand what you are, girl. You are a wolf the size of a spaniel who got lucky on a dock. Without my plan you would still be kneading dough for strangers."
"Without your plan I wouldn't have been taken from my own parking lot."
