They Thought I Failed—Until I Turned Down Harvard novel · Chapter 17 of 24
Chapter 17: Cap and Gown
Graduation was on the football field, in June, in black polyester.
The line formed alphabetically along the track, and the alphabet had a sense of humor.
Harwick, Linden, Bogert.
There were forty-one other seniors in our row, but they had all shuffled away from us, to give us room.
Holden came down the line at a jog with a bunch of grocery store roses.
His hair was combed wet.
He stopped in front of me, in front of everyone, and went down on one knee in the track dust.
"Laney," he said, loud enough for the rows around us.
"I made a mistake. A huge one. I let people get in my head."
A girl behind me whispered, "Oh my God," and lifted her phone.
"My dad talked to a lawyer. If you say the essays were a misunderstanding between friends, Harvard could look at it again. For both of us."
"Come to the party tonight as my girlfriend. We'll tell people we worked it out. You can still go to California, I don't care. I just need you to stand next to me."
He held the roses up.
