They Thought I Failed—Until I Turned Down Harvard novel · Chapter 18 of 24
Chapter 18: Norwalk
Norwalk Community College had a very long hallway with very good light.
It was the middle of July, and I was standing in it with an iced coffee and a calculus textbook, ten minutes early.
Across from the math wing was the Welcome Center, with a vinyl banner over the door.
NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION. ALL MAJORS WELCOME.
Through the open door I could see a circle of plastic chairs, and a woman with a lanyard holding a stack of name tags.
Holden was in the circle.
So was Camille, three chairs down, with her hands folded in her lap.
Neither of them had known I would be here.
"Okay, icebreaker!" said the woman with the lanyard, clapping once. "Say your name, your high school, and one thing about you."
Holden went first, because Holden always did.
"Holden Linden. Westport. I played lacrosse."
He smiled the old smile, to the left and to the right.
Nobody smiled back.
A boy two chairs over leaned forward and frowned at him.
"Wait," he said. "Westport? Linden?"
"Yeah?"
"Dude. You're the Harvard guy."
