Chapter 12: The Ruin
Seo-jun watched the clock on the dashboard for fifty-three minutes before he broke her rule.
He had parked on the road below the Ryu garden with the engine off.
He had done a great many things in that house for the chairman.
He had never before sat outside it counting.
At fifty-three minutes he got out.
At fifty-five Ye-rin came up the lawn by the side gate on her own two feet, with her chin level and a pear slice in her fist.
She got into the car and shut the door.
"He offered my mother a pension," she said. "A flat. A doctor of her choice."
"And?"
"I asked him which doctor." She ate the pear. "He didn't have an answer. I think he'd have given her anything."
Seo-jun's hands were tight on the wheel.
"What did you say?"
"That she's a cook, and cooks retire when they decide to." She looked at him. "He wanted me to let go of your arm. I told him it was the other way around."
He could not speak.
He started the engine because it gave his hands something to do.
That night he told her he was going to Busan.
It was the fourteenth of November.
He went every year on that night alone, and in twenty-four years he had never told anyone why.
She stood in the doorway of the kitchen with a wooden spoon in her hand.
"Go," she said. "I'm staying with my mother. I'll be at her table when you get back."
"I'd like you to come."
"I know you would." Her voice softened. "But I can't be on that ground yet. I'd look at the dirt and see her. Go and say what you have to say."
