Chapter 25: The Dock
Seo-jun had not followed her.
He had kept the promise for two days, which was longer than he had thought he could.
On the third morning he drove to Busan anyway, and he did not go to the hospital.
He went to the pier.
It was a long concrete jetty at the edge of the old harbor, where the fishing boats tied up at night and the gulls fought over the nets.
His father's ashes had gone into the water here.
He had been eight and standing in a borrowed black suit beside the chairman, who had one hand on his shoulder and a face carved out of stone.
He had not cried.
He had decided, standing there, that a boy who cried would be handled.
He walked to the end of the pier and sat on a bollard in the wind.
The water below was slate grey and moving.
He had told himself the whole way down that he was not here to wait for her.
He had argued with his father in his head, and with the chairman, whom he told to go to hell.
