Chapter 23: Berenice's Office
I deleted the voicemail before I could play it again.
Then I went back into the bedroom and took my mother's pearls off the nightstand.
I put them in standing up, in the dark, the way I had on every hard morning since I was twenty.
Clive opened one eye. "Who called?"
"Berenice. She wants me alone."
He came up on an elbow, all the way awake now.
"Then go alone," he said. "Text me the address when you're inside. Text me again when you're out."
"And if I don't?"
"Then I come up her stairs in my socks."
I kissed him, once, hard, and went.
My aunt's office was in an old brownstone on Charles Street, in Mount Vernon, one flight up.
A brass plate by the door. BERENICE CROMWELL, ATTORNEY AT LAW.
I had walked past it a hundred times as a girl and never once been asked inside.
She opened the door herself at eight.
No assistant. A kettle on a hot plate. A fern that needed water.
"Sit," she said. "Did you bring them?"
I touched my ear.
"Take one out. Please."
I didn't move.
"I'm not going to keep it, Iris. I want to see it on my desk next to this."
