Chapter 27: James Says No
James woke before anyone else, which had never happened in his life.
He lay in the wreck of the guest bed with Joel's arm across his stomach and Raven's hair in his mouth, and Max asleep across the three of them with his face in Joel's shoulder.
His body felt strange.
It felt full and quiet and warm, low in the belly.
He put his hand flat on his belly and grinned at the ceiling.
"Don't," Joel muttered, without opening his eyes.
"I'm not doing anything."
"You're being smug. I can hear it."
"I'm helping the room."
Raven, who had not said a word since the night before, reached up and put his hand over James's mouth.
It was the funniest thing that had happened to James in a year, and he was very careful not to laugh, because Max was sleeping.
Breakfast at Greywater was served in the long hall, with the three packs at three tables and the elders at the head.
James took his seat at the Helix table with a plate of eggs and the particular glow of a man who has been fucked silly and does not care who knows.
His aunts were staring at him.
He winked at them.
Across the room Max came in between Joel and Raven, with the gray coat over his arm and his bare hands in plain sight.
The Tyros got to their feet.
The Rydes got to their feet.
A moment later, with a scrape of benches, so did Helix, and James, who had meant to be first, was last.
Max stopped dead in the door.
His ears went red.
"Sit down," he said. "Please, sit down. It's eggs."
Nobody sat.
It was Linda who finally broke it.
She came in through the kitchen door in a plain blue dress and no gloves.
