Chapter 13: The Count at the Lodge
I went down in one of Bastian's shirts and a pair of borrowed riding breeches, with my hair braided back.
He had tried to stop me at the stairhead.
I had put a hand on his chest.
"This one is mine," I said.
He looked at me for a long moment, and nodded.
"I will be ten feet behind you," he said.
The lodge yard was full.
Half the hunting party stood in a loose ring on the gravel.
Ladies in riding habits stood beside gentlemen with their hounds on leashes.
The Queen sat her white horse at the back, still as a statue.
My father stood in the middle, red-faced, in his town coat, with two footmen behind him.
"There she is," he said, in his enormous voice. "My disgrace."
"You disowned me," I said. "In the plaza. You said I had no house, no name and no claim on yours."
"I did," he said.
"Then why are you here?" I asked.
"Because I am a father," said Aurelio Ardaval.
"I will not see my daughter paraded in a man's clothing like a common."
He did not finish the word.
I stood ten feet from him with my hands at my sides.
