Chapter 15: The Queen's Rooms
Bastian's POV
The Queen received me in her private sitting room, in a dressing gown, with a glass of wine in her hand.
It was past midnight.
Two candles burned.
She had dismissed her maids.
By that light she looked exactly her age, a handsome woman of fifty-two with a long tired face.
"Lord Justice," she said. "I did not think you would come."
"You summoned me, Majesty."
"I sent a card. Sit," she said.
I did not sit.
She smiled, a little, and sipped her wine.
"Then I'll be brief," she said. "The cook's note names your bride."
"The royal maid will swear she saw the Lady Ximena in the kitchens," she said. "The girl Inés has already signed a page."
"I will preside, and I will convict."
"You will convict an innocent woman."
"I will convict a woman who has put a spoon in my son's life," said the Queen.
"She has made him doubt me. She has made that girl doubt me."
"In a month she will be the richest woman in Valdoro, married to the one man I cannot move."
"The mine is hers," I said.
"The mine is Orange Hill silver, and my treasury needs it," said the Queen.
