Chapter 16: The Hearing
Ximena's POV
The Court of the Crown sat in the Orange Palace, in the long hall under the gilded ceiling.
It held four hundred people.
At the far end, on a dais, the Queen sat in a high-backed chair in black.
A veil was pinned to her hair.
Beside her, in a lower chair with a blanket over his knees, sat the King.
He was very old, and he was asleep.
I stood at the bar in the green silk, with my hands folded.
Bastian was on my left, barred from the bench, in his plain black coat without his chain.
He had not let go of my hand.
"The accused will answer," said the Queen's clerk.
"I am not guilty," I said.
"The Court will hear the witness."
The Queen's maid came forward.
She was a narrow woman of forty in a gray gown, with a long nose and downcast eyes.
She curtseyed.
"I saw the Lady Ximena in the royal kitchens on the ninth," she said, in a thin steady voice.
"She came at dusk and spoke to the cook. She gave him a small packet. She said it would make the cake sweeter."
A murmur went round the hall.
