Chapter 14: Dorian's Sister
I found Dorian on the sawmill roof on the fourteenth, where he went when he wanted to be alone.
I climbed the ladder one-handed, and he watched me do it and didn't offer help.
"Delphine says you've waited eleven years for another ward to walk out of Blood Moon's gate," I said. "Is it true?"
He looked at the valley for a while.
"Sit," he said. "It's a long one, and I only tell it once a decade."
I sat on the beam next to him, an arm's length away.
"My sister was twenty," he said. "Our father had just died. I was twenty-one, too young to swear for her, so our uncle held the seat and signed her form."
"Back then every oath in the valley had to be sealed in the Blood Moon hall, by the presiding elder, with the cane." He turned his hands over and looked at the palms. "That was Enid's husband. Our uncle wouldn't give him the river pass, so he tapped the cane and refused the seal."
My stomach went cold.
"She stood in that yard with the whole valley watching," Dorian said. "An unsworn ward. She was struck at dawn."
"What happened to her?"
"She walked down the gravel road with one bag. I drove that road for a month looking for her."
"Did you ever find her?"
"A postcard comes every Christmas, no return address, with the same four words on it. I'm fine. Stay."
He said it flatly, with no weight on any word.
"That's why I watched your Alpha's hand," he said. "I know what stops a pen."
"So Delphine is right."
