Chapter 21: Blood Moon

The Blood Moon rose over Hollis Ridge at a quarter past five on the thirty-first, red and swollen.

The whole valley came to the hall to watch it.

Dorian had spent eleven days driving every motel road between us and Spokane.

He came back each night with nothing, and he said nothing about it.

Tonight he walked beside me through the big doors in a clean black shirt, with sixty Iron Hollow wolves behind us.

The hall was lit with every lamp it owned.

Three hundred Blood Moon wolves filled the benches, and they went silent as we came in.

The Iron Hollow men lined the east wall.

Odette stood among them with her spoon tucked into her apron pocket, and she gave me a small nod.

At the back, the gray-haired enforcer leaned beside the doors.

The four youth patrol kids stood next to him, trying not to be noticed.

Enid sat in the carved chair at the head of the long table.

Her cane was across her knees.

The four elders flanked her, and the oldest of them did not look at anybody.

Delphine stood at her mother's shoulder in a gray dress, with her braid pinned flat and her eyes on the floor.

Garrick stood alone on the open boards in front of the table.

He had been there since sundown, answering the void.

He didn't look at me.

I knew exactly how hard that was for him.

I looked at the back of his neck and held on to that.
