Chapter 18: Once Already
I could have said it was nothing.
I'd said it to Hugo, and he'd let it go, because Hugo had never once asked me a second question.
Seth would ask a second question.
He'd ask a third, and then he'd sit in his hammock and wait until I answered.
"Come up," I said. "I don't want to do this on the stairs."
The loft was dark except for the moon through the window.
I sat on the end of the bed.
He sat on the floor against the wall, as far from me as the little room let him.
That was how I knew he was scared too.
"You're going to think I'm crazy," I said.
"The papers already said that. I didn't believe them."
I looked at my hands.
"I've lived this summer before."
He didn't say anything.
"All of it. The yacht. Arabella pulling me over. Archer telling me I was a strong swimmer."
"Last time I screamed for him, and he swam away, and I spent the next two years trying to beat her."
"I found the page four error at three in the morning, the first time. That's how I knew."
