I stood at the shed wall with the black phone against my ear and the cord stretched across the bench.

Seth had stopped planing.

Bess had stopped everything.

"You'd step aside," I said. "For me."

"I deleted your email," Hugo said. "I don't get to keep the chair."

"I'll come Monday."

"Is that a yes?"

"It's a Monday," I said, and hung up.

On Monday morning I put on the blue dress and my own sandals.

Seth drove me over the bridge in the truck, with his hand on my knee the whole way.

"You can say yes," he said, at the light on America's Cup Avenue. "I'd still like you."

"I know."

"I'd visit. I'd sit in the lobby in my sweatshirt and scare the receptionist."

"I know, Seth."

The Wakefield Marine building stood on the waterfront where it had stood for ninety years, all brick and glass, with the anchor over the doors.

I'd walked in under that anchor at six in the morning for two years.

I'd been carried out of it once, in another life.

The receptionist stood up when I came in.

So did the two security guards.
